ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL

St Paul’s in brief

St Paul’s is London’s cathedral and the seat of the Bishop of London. This treasured English Baroque masterpiece, the work of Sir Christopher Wren, is the latest incarnation of many churches that stood on this site since 604.

Whilst Westminster Abbey is associated with the Monarchy, St Paul’s is very much the spiritual heart of the City of London and in the last two centuries it has become the Nation’s cathedral, the resting place of military heroes including Lord Nelson and the Duke of Wellington.

When completed in 1711, St Paul’s was seen as London’s resurgence after the Great Fire of London of 1666. The cathedral once more served as a bastion of resilience and endurance during the dark days of the World War II, when the capital was relentlessly bombarde by the German Air Force.

Not just a place of reverence, but also one for celebration in 1981 it was the chosen venue for the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

visiting the Cathedral

A visit to St Paul’s Cathedral should top any visit to the City of London. It’s an opportunity to marvel at breathtaking architecture, monuments and artwork, see the resting places of military heroes, artists and politicians and learn about their contributions to the nation. The cathedral’s architecture has influenced the development of London for centuries with its dome becoming the pride of the City. During the tour we will see up close how ground braking Wren’s design was and if the dome is accessible you can climb it and appreciate some of the most dramatic views of the London. Other highlights are the Crypt, the OBE Chapel, the cathedral’s scaled model, the Sanctuary, the Light of the World by William Holman Hunt & more…
